Life can be stressful, exhausting, frustrating, and angering among many other feelings. All these feelings are completely valid and there is nothing wrong with feeling some type of way. What is important, however, is that we take the time to balance ourselves and not let all our emotions become overwhelming. Our mind can handle all that we feel, but we can reach a point when it becomes too much to process mentally and carry all at once. When that happens we may reach a breakdown, or even experience a panic attack.
To help with balancing our mind with life’s emotions it is necessary to meditate whether that be a calming mental relaxation or even a physical activity that provides enjoyment. One activity I enjoy is practicing calm deep self reflection. I can do this anywhere, whether that be in a quiet room, or in a busy airport where I focus on a soothing thought and tune everything out. Whenever I meditate in a relaxed state I close my eyes and breath in and out deeply. This helps my body produce endorphins. Endorphins bring feelings of euphoria and a general well-being. I focus on one calming thought which allows me to refocus myself and relieve any negative mental emotions I may be experiencing and release them. I do this anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes and then continue on with my day.
At times I need a type of physical meditation. I may have stress built up mentally that begins to affect me in a physical way. I feel physically tense and my body tight and full of physical pressure. Some physical meditative activities I enjoy are hiking, walking along the beach and occasionally I use gym workouts to relieve any negative emotions. Hiking and walking along the beach I especially enjoy as nature has a natural relieving effect. By physically moving and exercising I am able to relieve any physical tension that has built up from negative emotions.
Examples of physical mediation which are not out in nature would consist of working out at the gym (lifting weights and doing some type of cardio exercise). Strength training helps refocus your mindset, due to the endorphins your body produces. Our bodies also naturally produce endorphins when our heart rate is elevated from some type of cardiovascular exercise.
Keep in mind that everyone is different and may benefit from one type of meditation over the other. Some may even need to alternate between different mediation styles (as I do) depending on what emotions they feel. So find what works best for you, and make sure to take the time to relieve your negative emotions to help you live a calm and mentally balanced life.
